Ready AT LAST. Whisker and all :)

I tried to paint whiskers with white goache but it didn´t look good, so I changed to using a sharp knife instead . Looks much better this way.

Colours I have used are:
Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Lemon yellow, Transparent yellow, Neutral tint, Indian red, Ultramarin.

Techniques I have used are:
The background I painted wet on wet in several layers, letting dry between layers.
The cat I painted wet on dry. More layers of paint on the head and front legs to create perspective.
I have also lifted paint with water and soaking up with some paper to get soft edges and feeling of the sunlight.

Reference-photo and WIP-photos in the last post if you´d like to have a look!

I´m so happy for your visit and I LOVE reading your comments!
Wellcome back!

  1. Hi Cath, glad to see you posting again! The cat is spectacular, wow! Nice solution for the whiskers. I read somewhere recently of someone using white ink for whiskers.

  4. 'Whisker and All' demonstrates without saying ... that patience while painting in watercolor is the 'missing link.' As you remarked - "The background I painted wet on wet in several layers, letting dry between layers." Letting a painting dry between layers while that technique will drive some artists up the wall... artists like you know... the results are more than worth the effort. Wonderful work. It is amazing how many beginning artists want to produce a great work... in one pass of color.

    1. Thank you Elizabeth :) Yes it is a bit stressful to wait for the layers to dry. Especially when like whith this background it is impossible to use a hairdryer.
