Work in progress -A second painting.

This has been very interesting for me! With the last paintings different steps fresh in my head still, I went ahead with doing one more of the same. With one goal in mind: to be able to do it one more time, but with less fuss, so that I really can do it as a learning experience! I have taken some photos during the process. The first starts from the bottom of the post. And the last is at the top. I have used two different papers. The process painting is Daler Rowney. And the last finished painting is my favourite support; Arches fine.

One thing I tried to make in a different way was the use of masking fluid, but the problem with masking fluid is that it´s difficult to be as gentle with it as needed in the painting .I though I was very careful but apperantly not enough. It looks as big round spots of white paint instead of gentle highlights in the paper! So now I HAD to struggle to try to make my mistaces show less! And that was not the plan when I started this second painting.BUT I have learnt some more in the struggle! NO maskingmedium in the future if I want it to show very little. White crayon is much better! Plus the back of the thin brush.

Here is the first finished painting from the last post. -To compare with!
Support: Daler Rowney 300 gr. fine. Cold Pressed NOT

This is the finished Process Painting from today!
Support: Arches 185 gr. fine Cold Pressed

6.) I rubbed of the masking fluid and discovered that the white marks were far to much, I wanted it much much less. Ok; had to start rubbing around the painted colour with my flat hard acrylic brush to move it on top of the whites. Also adding some more colour on those areas. I liked the dark lines from the back of the small brush much much better than the white waterreflections bellow the boat on this painting.. I had to make them white lines dissapear some, therefore the dark reflections from under the boat are bigger on this last painting. Oh; I also painted the yellow (Raw Sienna) and red (Scarlet Lake) before putting to much dark reflections underneath, to keep the colours pretty clean.

 picture number two.

5.) I wet the paper on and around the tree area. Also where the water reflections were going to be. I put on some "Transparent yellow" and "French Ultramarine blue" on the tree area and also some on the water area bellow.

Picture number one

1 .) After the light drawing I put on some maskingfluid. I put on a very thin wash of Antwerpblue on
the whole paper (exept from the boat). I let it dry completely.

2.) The second wash was the same, but this time I didn´t paint on the sky, only the rest of the paper. I let it dry completely.

3.) Third wash; the same Antwerp blue, but NOT on the left mountain and sky.

4.) Fourth wash I painted a very thin layer of "Permanent Rose" everywhere except from on  the sky and the left mountain. This gave the painting a bit warmer feeling. Let dry completely.

Wishing you all a great weekend!

  4. You managed to make the background of this version much softer and fresh. I also like that you used more warm reds in the foreground. Some purists would not agree, but I think that for fine white details, like the ropes, it is better to use chinese or titanium white, instead of masking. Like you, I also find the masking fluid difficult to control.

    1. I think it is allowed to brake all rules if it is a benefit for the painting. The finished result is the most important. Thank you for you comment Blaga!

    1. Seems as if most of you like the secind version more. I like the first one the best. And the mistaces are there. I see them. But I have taken away some of them. Thank you Jane!

  8. Interesting to see your process, Catharina! Me and masking fluid do not like each other. :) The hard edges that masking fluid leave, are hard to soften, but you did a great job! As Blaga, now and then I have used a little white gouache sometimes to add some white highlights.

    1. Yes masking fluid was not a hit. But it is good to try it out in different kinds of paintings. It´s allways a learning experience. Thank you for comming by Judy! :)

  14. Dear Catharina - such lovely paintings. I think you did wonderful with the masking fluid - I know it always a difficult thing to work with for me as well. I try not using it but there are just times when one has to in order to save the whites. Thanks for sharing. Hope you have a great week.
