African sunset . . .Afrikansk solnedgång

Here is the sunsetpaintings I told you I´ve been working on the last days. All of them very different in technique as you can see:
. . . . .

The first one is my own favourite amongst theese lastest paintings. I don´t know
what kind of paper it is, but in some ways it fellt, at least a bit, like Arches, because of the
very soft flow of the pigments. I like that. I had this paper allready taped to
a big plastic board since a long time ago so I don´t remember.
. . . . .
inne i pappret. Jag tycker om när det gör så. Effekten blir mjukare och du har
lite mer tid på dig.

A bit looser painting. Do you recognize two elephants to the right?
I put them there to balance the painting instead of using small trees as
I did in the other paintings. And I also choosed to paint them in purple/violett
to get some kind of balance, because I had allready picked that colour in the
treetop. Am I thinking right here? What do you other artists think?
. . . . .

This one is mixed media. My son was talking about acrylicpaintings
so I thought I should give it a try on a sunsetpainting. But I choosed to
mix acryllic with watercolour instead of only using acryllic. The dark
bottom of this one is in paynesgrey acryllic, and the top is watercolour.
But this didn´t change my feelings about the medium; I believe there is
much more "life" in watercolour.
. . . . .

This painting I guess you recignize? I have done small
changes to this one -at the top of the tree. I wasn´t totaly
happy with the tree trunk earlier.
. . . . .

  1. Oh, these are just beautiful! All of them!

Since I had mostly been learning to paint first with watercolors I have a similar feeling about acrylics...that they are duller somehow...less alive. Maybe it is because they are thicker and don't move as much even with water. I am just trying to learn about acrylics, myself. They're just very different than watercolors, but I have seen some beautiful things done with them. I will keep trying.

  4. Wow Catharina:) You attracted my attention with those beautiful paintings! In all your paintings I love the beautiful African colors! In the first one I love how you handled the trees. In the second the tree again and the lovely elephants. You were right about the colors you've used. Beautiful! The third: the tree again:) and the simplicity of this painting. So nice! The last: yeah the trees again hihi.
These are four beautiful paintings Catharina, they should stay together!

    1. I think the acrylic one. But I am not sure he wants it on his wall. :D We´ll see. He would like a very realistic african sunset and I am not that skilled.
Thank you for stoping by Judy! Take care!

  7. I love the glow that your paintings radiate, Catharina, I particularly like the last two. All very African.

The last time I was in Africa was 1979, when I was fortunate enough to be on the crew that flew HM The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Andrew on a two week tour of the African Continent, Cairo to Cape Town.

  11. All of these are wonderful Catharina. I love the vibrant colours you've used and I don't have a favourite as each one is great in it's own way. Some time ago I painted the same scene in both watercolour and acrylic just as an experiment and although there was little difference in the colours and detail, there was no mistaking the 'flatness' of the acrylic.
